It’s Actually What You’re Feeding Your Mind….

Probably one of the common things I’ve been hearing from people when they write in after reading my emails and book is the following phrase:

“I’ve read tons of articles about nutrition or diets, plus personal development books. I’ve tried getting into ‘intuitive eating’ or ‘whole foods’ or other such regimens. I’ve played with meditation a few times. I’ve tried several of the popular weight loss programs and even some coaching…I’ve spent a good deal of time and money on trying to not overeat the way I do on a regular basis and I STILL feel stuck and like there’s this wall that blocks me from being able to change.

Nothing seems to work, at least not for long. I feel like a total failure. I feel like I’m stuck in this pattern that I can’t break out of and it’s just going to get worse. Then I feel like giving up.”

I’ve said this very same thing to myself in the past.

I’m guessing that as you are reading this, you probably feel or have felt exactly that same way at some point.

Being stuck is something that can manifest itself in a variety of ways.

Here’s some of the top ways stuck-ness rears it’s head:

1. You feel foggy-headed/confused/lost as to what to try or what’s really “right” for you.

You might feel a calling towards something, but you don’t know what it looks like. You can’t hear any instincts or internal guidance that would lead you to something that would work. You don’t know how to access this intuition in the first place, or if it’s even real. You’ve tried practically everything under the sun and may have even had some success along he way, but you still haven’t figured out something that would stick.

2. You feel like there’s a block between you and what you want.

You might have a sense about what it is that would work for you, but every time you start to take a step in that direction, you feel a wall of anxiety, fear and/or overwhelm. You either distract yourself with a thousand other things to do, start comparing yourself to others or shut down with negative thoughts. You tell yourself you can’t really do the thing you desire to do and never end up taking action towards your goal.

3. You can’t see ‘how” it’s every going to be possible to actually achieve that ideal you really want.

You might see other people out in the world who seem to be rocking it in their life: they look fabulous, they eat whatever they feel like and seem carefree, they appear happy. You compare yourself to them, feel bad about yourself and then shut yourself down by telling yourself, “what’s the point? I can never have the looks, energy, money, personality, body [insert your word here] that that person has. Besides, what I want is practically impossible to achieve and would require commitment , time and constraints I can’t manage…plus I don’t have a support group to guide me. It will be too hard and I can’t handle it.”

Any of those sound familiar?

If you relate to any of these, it’s critical that you understand there’s nothing wrong with you for feeling that way in the first place.

Everything in the media and society  you live in has been set up to encourage you to disconnect from your own intuition about what’s right for you in order to get you enrolled in buying another product, program, clothing, house or lifestyle.

Whether it’s public schooling, spiritual traditions we’re brought up in, family & friends’ opinions, hype for the latest food products, the companies or bosses we may work for or a culture that values working hard over taking time to care for yourself….we’re bombarded with hundreds of messages every day.

You’re surrounded by a world that encourages you to disconnect from your own intuition and follow formulas that others have assured you will be risk-free and “guaranteed”.

The truth is that NOTHING is a sure thing for everyone in every situation.

It used to be that becoming a lawyer or a doctor was a sure thing that would give you stability and financial security. It used to be that investing with large firms in the stock market would assure solid returns. It used to be that the groceries we bought were assured to be pure from local farms instead of modified and manufactured in ways we are not aware of.

One of the biggest ways I see people sabotaging themselves when they are trying to find something to work for them is that they become obsessed with getting the “exact steps” or formulas that will guarantee the security and safety they believe they need.

Here’s something else I hear quite often:

“I bought this program because it promised the exact steps I needed to take to stop overeating and to lose this weight…yet I haven’t actually gotten through all those steps. Or any of them. I went through the program and then started looking for more advice.”

So they keep buying program after program and research hundreds of formulas or tips (I was totally guilty of this when I began transforming my relationship with eating, by the way) and yet can’t figure out why they can’t seem to implement the information they gather.

Here’s the MOST IMPORTANT part of this post:

Taking action is critical to having success.

But there’s no way you’re going to take action if you’re blocked by fear, anxiety or overwhelm.

There’s no way you’ll take one baby step towards what you want until you’ve gotten past the wall of “invisible scripts” or limiting beliefs that are keeping you from absorbing and implementing all the fabulous formulas you’re learning in the first place.

You might want to read that again.

It’s extremely important to really get that to be able to understand why you’re not where you want to be.

Many programs teach you how to change your diet and exercise or other such excellent formulas and action steps for eating “right” and having a body you love. Having action steps is completely important, so that’s why my book and program include a step-by-step formula for taking action.

BUT many of these action-step, formula-only programs are not showing you how to get rid of the mental, spiritual and emotional gunk that prevents you from taking action in the first place.

Hence why when you’ve read everything, done everything, you still feel stuck.

So, if there’s one thing you can do right now for yourself, it’s to take a moment to sit and write a list of the top most negative beliefs you have to start noticing what you’re dealing with.

That’s a powerful action step, even if you have no idea how the things you want will ever work out.
